Two months since the hospital (Jan. 22)

It’s been exactly two months since Lucas returned from the hospital after the frightful episode in which he couldn’t breath for a sustained period of time.  So much has happened in our lives since then — it’s been a busy, stressful time lately which is why we haven’t posted anything for weeks —  and in most ways we’ve moved beyond the accident that happened back in November.  Indeed, the stress in our lives lately has nothing to do with Lucas.  Thankfully, he’s recovered 100%, and then some, and is doing better than ever.

We haven’t fully explained Lucas’s recovery on the blog.  In fact, the last time we really wrote in detail about the effects of the hospitalization we still weren’t sure if Lucas would fully recover.  It occurred to us suddenly one day — more than two weeks after Lucas was back home from the hospital — that he was acting like the old Lucas again.  His reading speed was back to normal, along with his dexterity and hand-eye coordination, and perhaps most importantly, he was starting to complain vociferously if we didn’t get him the right book.

He was also making jokes again.  Since then, Lucas’s sense of humor has continued to blossom, almost as if his new lease on life has turned him into a little stand-up comedian.  It’s hard to describe his humor, and really you have to be around him for a while to appreciate it, but we’re convinced that he’s just about the funniest three year-old out there.

As we have dealt with some challenging personal matters in recent weeks, being around Lucas has been a blessing.  There’s nothing like snuggling with a sweet, funny, loving child to get you through hard times.  Lucas seems to understand when one of us is upset, or frustrated, or stressed out, and becomes even more snuggly during those times.  (As we mentioned once before, only two things have changed about Lucas since the hospitalization: he no longer likes to chew on bananas 5 times a day, and he’s gotten over his aversion to cuddling.)  So in addition to the budding sense of humor he also seems to be developing some real empathy, and intuition.

Lucas started school again last week and according to his nurse had a couple great days.  Things are going well, and we’ll have more to report and reflect on soon…

For now, a few photos from the first part of 2013, including Lucas getting to see his favorie musician Caspar Babypants live at the local community center:

Sledding (January 6)

In continuing with the theme of our last post, Lucas celebrated his first real snow experience this weekend!  It was amazing enough that we were able to actually get Lucas to our friends’ house in the snowy mountains near Leavenworth… but the fact that we actually went sledding was mind-blowing, something we previously thought would never be possible with Lucas.

Eli, Lily and Pax had all the additional gear we needed around the house, and with their help we rigged up an inner-tube to fit his tumble-form chair, vent, and other accessories.  The rest is history…

(yes, Krista and Lucas do crash into the camerman in that last clip)

Snow is awesome!
